Hewlett-Packard Alumni Association Board of Directors


Chair: Curt Gowan

Email Provides direction and leadership to the board. Moderates forums; manages the HPAlumnipedia; edits HP Alumni News. Manages relationships with other alumni organizations and with HP – including escalation of member issues to HP.

Curt is retired after 30 years in startup and turnaround divisions within HP. He held engineering roles in R&D, quality, product marketing, and technical marketing. In retirement, Curt is doing independent research and working on pro bono projects. He has BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University. Active in HPAA since 2003; elected to the HPAA board in May 2004; Chair since May 2005.


Alliances Director, Social Chairman, and Secretary: Mary Tate

Email Responsible for developing and managing alliances to support the organization’s infrastructure and program costs. Manages Bay Area networking events. Publishes minutes for all board meetings. Conducts and administers elections of the board. Drives the strategic planning process for the organization.

Mary has held management positions in sales and marketing for the past 20 years. Most recently, she has been consulting on channel and alliance programs as well as launching her own personal organization business, Life Made Easy Services, focused on helping people organize their home, paperwork and finances. Previously, she was the Director of Strategic and Technology Alliances at iPass in Redwood Shores for 7 years and at HP, the first Global Business Manager for the iPass/Cisco alliance. Mary holds a BS in Economics from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and has been an HPAA board member since August 2003.


Finance and Membership Director: Mabel Esteves

Email Manages HPAA's financial books; publishes monthly and annual finance reports; manages HPAA's bank account. Drives the budget process for the organization. Responsible for qualifying, processing, and approving new members; publishes monthly membership analysis.

Mabel's 22 years in HP quality engineering included work in materials, reliability, product regulations, and ISO 9000 program management. She previously worked as a design engineer at GTE Sylvania for four years. Mabel has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico and has taught at the University and at the Puerto Rico Institute of Technology. She has completed an accounting certificate program at Sierra College. She has served the 20,000-member Society of Women Engineers at local, regional, and national levels – including National VP. HPAA Membership Coordinator since May 2005; board member since September 2005.


Technical Director: Bill Parrish

Email Investigates and resolves technical and process problems. Works with board members to troubleshoot their respective functions and services. Works with HPAA members to make the email communication process via Yahoo Groups as reliable as possible. Drives quality and reliability for the organization. Evaluates potential alternatives and enhancements.

Bill worked in R&D, support, and system validation for HP for 31 years and has been consulting on HP 9000 system validation at HP. Bill has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has been assisting HPAA on technical and other issues since 2005; board member since May 2006.


Jobs Director: Srikara Rao

Email Responsible for HPAA Jobs and HPAA WorldJobs. Moderates the job posts; processes recruiter applications; coaches recruiters on posting. Manages relationships with recruiters and hiring firms.

Srikara worked at HP Cupertino R&D from 2000 to 2005 as a software design engineer. Since he left HP, he has been at Bluecoat Systems in Sunnyvale as a Senior Software Engineer. He is also actively involved with the Tennisball Cricket Association, a non-profit organization that runs cricket leagues in the Bay Area. Srikara has a BE from the Indira Gandhi College of Engineering, Navi Mumbai. Board member since January 2008.


Networking Director: Beth Gorell

Email Responsible for HPAA's professional and personal networking services, including the HP Alumni group on LinkedIn and the Alumni Directory. Provides guidance to members on how to use networking tools and how to set up informal local networking events.

Beth has held a broad range of senior-level and management positions at Silicon Valley firms since 1986. She is currently Managing Partner at SAJE Consulting, an independent consulting company, and a senior consultant at M Squared, consulting on business strategy, process improvement and organizational design. Beth has also held positions at Stanford University, IPS Associates and ReplayTV. Beth was with HP for 14 years, during which she held numerous positions within Enterprise Computing, Computer Products, Service and Support, and Channel Marketing. Beth holds a BA from the University of Washington and an MBA from the University of Washington's Foster School of Business, and has additional training from the Kellogg School of Management, the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Harvard Business School Publishing, and UC Berkeley Executive Development. Board member since January 2008.
